Rush Meets Frontiers in 2D

Sonic Momentum started development before Sonic Frontiers was even announced, yet it ended up capturing the cyber space aesthetic in a way that many fans feel surpasses the official game. The sprite work draws from the Sonic Advance series as a foundation, but every animation has been completely reworked with custom frames, lighting effects, and chroma distortions that give the game its own visual identity.
The levels lean heavily into the Sonic Rush palette — vibrant aquatic environments, neon-lit corridors, and parallax backgrounds that scroll at different depths to create a genuine sense of speed. Stage 1-7 in particular channels a 2D version of Starfall Islands with stunning hand-crafted backgrounds. The camera sits wider than most 2D Sonic games, giving you time to react and appreciate the scenery at high speeds — a deliberate choice that sets it apart from titles like Mania or Superstars where the camera feels tighter.

Movement System and Combat

The core of Sonic Momentum is its layered movement system. Beyond the basics of Spin Dash and Super Peel-out (inspired by Sonic CD), you have aerial dashes, double jumps, homing attacks, aerial stomps, and rail grinding with rail switching. Every technique feeds into a rev-up charging system that rewards chaining moves together to maintain speed through each stage. The learning curve is real. The controls are not immediately intuitive — expect to spend some time in the tutorial and training room before the system clicks. But once it does, the movement becomes deeply satisfying. Multiple routes through each level mean that mastering the full moveset opens up faster and more creative paths. The combat system integrates directly into the platforming rather than stopping the action. Button-mashing combos, charged afterimages for enemy juggling, and a dedicated training room let you practice without the pressure of a ticking clock. Elemental shields like the Lightning Shield modify both your combat and movement options.

Playable Characters

Sonic

The fully playable character in this build. Custom-revamped sprites with whirlwind multijump, aerial movement, combat combos, and the full momentum toolkit. His moveset is the deepest and most polished of the three.

Tails

Thunder-based movement mechanics. Activates boost by holding the attack button. Present in the character select menu, though his moveset is still being refined for the full release.

Knuckles

Dig-based mechanics that let him interact with terrain differently. Activates boost via the attack button. Available in the menu alongside Tails, with full implementation expected in later builds.

Cyber Space Stages

The Beta Edition includes 7 stages numbered 1-1 through 1-7, each with multiple routes that vary in difficulty. The level design pulls from across the Sonic franchise: Stage 1-2 and 1-3 channel Water Palace from Sonic Rush with gorgeous aquatic environments. Stage 1-4 shifts to a Chemical Plant-style industrial aesthetic. Stage 1-7, the final level, is widely considered the highlight — a 2D interpretation of Frontiers' Starfall that many players feel outdoes the source material. Level gimmicks keep each stage feeling distinct: rail grinding, crystal light switches, fish circle launchers, rainbow rings, and moving platforms all force you to adapt your approach. A dual ranking system scores you on both time and ring collection separately, with grades from D up to S-rank and Diamond, plus Bronze/Silver/Gold medals — giving completionists plenty to chase.
