From Motion Controls to Modern Gameplay
Sonic and the Secret Rings had one of the most compelling premises in the franchise. Sonic gets pulled into the world of the Arabian Nights, where an evil genie named Erazor Djinn is erasing the stories to absorb their power. A flame burns on Sonic's chest — his life force — and if it goes out before he collects the seven World Rings, he dies. The level design was creative, the boss fights were inventive, and the soundtrack remains one of the best in the entire series. The problem was the Wii remote. Sonic ran forward automatically while you tilted the controller to steer and pulled it back to brake. Project Reignition strips all of that away and rebuilds the control scheme from scratch. Full analog stick movement gives you direct control over Sonic, with free camera rotation on the right stick. The game now supports Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and Steam Deck controllers natively, plus keyboard and mouse.A Rebuilt Skill System
The original Secret Rings had a frustrating design choice: many of its unlockable skills existed solely to give Sonic basic movement abilities he should have had from the start. You had to grind through hours of clunky gameplay before the controls became tolerable. Project Reignition makes proper controls the default and removes the padding skills entirely. What remains is a system of 50+ genuine gameplay enhancements organized in a redesigned menu with tier-based categories and dropdown navigation. The team also added brand-new skills exclusive to the remake: Quick Step for lateral dodging, Double Jump, Light Speed Dash to chain through rings, and Light Speed Attack for rapid enemy targeting. A preset system with custom names lets you save different loadouts and swap between them before missions. Completing missions earns XP/SP that feeds back into unlocking more skills, creating a loop where new abilities open up faster routes through previously completed stages. The Six Worlds
Six of the original seven worlds are fully playable in v0.4.2. Each world contains a main story mission plus multiple challenge types — ring collection, enemy elimination, time attacks, no-death runs, races, and object hunts. Every world also features two custom music remixes created for the remake, expanding on the original's already exceptional soundtrack.| World | Highlights |
|---|---|
| Sand Oasis | Arabian desert with fire hazards and towering architecture. Boss: Sand Scorpion. The infamous egg collection mission has been fixed — matching nests now appear right after picking up each egg |
| Dinosaur Jungle | Lush prehistoric environment with crystal-clear water and a Triceratops chase sequence where the new Speed Break controls truly shine |
| Evil Foundry | Tight industrial corridors built for on-rails action. Satisfying last-second dodges and hidden shortcuts. Boss: Ifrit |
| Levitated Ruin | Wide-open aerial ruins with gargoyle chases, automated light paths, and 2D platforming sections. Strong wind mechanics add genuine challenge |
| Pirate Storm | Sonic rides cannonballs over stormy seas, surfs tidal waves, and uses Time Break for precision jumps. Boss: Captain Behemoth. A community favorite |
| Skeleton Dome | The sixth world included in the SAGE 2025 demo, expanding the playable content beyond the original five |
Presentation and Audio
The environments have been completely rebuilt with upgraded graphics — improved water effects, detailed vegetation, dynamic fire, and a redesigned Sonic model that's leaner than the original's wider proportions. The main menu runs at 60 FPS with fire effects and uses the Crush 40 version of "Seven Rings in Hand" as its theme, while the options screen follows the visual style of modern Sonic titles. The soundtrack expands on what was already considered one of Sonic's best. Each world now has 15+ compositions including two additional remixes per world for challenge missions. Standout tracks include the Act 2 remix of Pirate Storm (inspired by Dragon's Lair from Black Knight) and the Act 3 remix of Levitated Ruin. Voice acting is available in English, Japanese, and Spanish (Spanish still in progress), with subtitles in nine languages. The original storybook-style cutscenes are preserved, featuring Jason Griffith's performance as Sonic — widely praised for capturing his confident, playful personality.Known Limitations
Project Reignition is still in active development, and there are a few rough edges worth noting. Performance optimization is ongoing — players on modest hardware or certain AMD GPU configurations may experience stuttering, particularly during first launches as assets cache. Some sections in Levitated Ruin feel constrained by automated light paths that limit player agency. And while removing motion controls is overwhelmingly the right call, a few reviewers note it does strip away some of the original's novelty factor — though almost nobody considers that a meaningful trade-off.Project Reignition FAQ
