Two Generations of the Best Sonic Fighting Game

Sonic Smackdown isn't just one game — it's two distinct fighting games that approach Sonic combat from different angles. The original proved that Sonic characters work in a traditional fighting game. Ultimate takes that foundation and builds something more ambitious on top of it. The original Sonic Smackdown is a polished 1v1 fighter with a roster of over 10 characters, each with unique movesets, combos, and supers. It's widely considered the best Sonic fighting game ever made, even years after release. Arcade mode takes you through the full roster, Versus mode supports local play on the same PC, and Training mode lets you lab combos without pressure. Ultimate Sonic Smackdown launched in 2025 as a spiritual sequel created by Arc Forged and YouTuber Chocolus alongside his team. It's a tag fighter inspired by Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 — you can play classic 1v1 or build a team of up to three characters, call assists mid-fight, switch between them on the fly, and chain supers across your whole squad. The biggest addition is rollback netcode, bringing competitive-quality online multiplayer to the Sonic fighting game scene for the first time.
Ultimate also introduces cel-shaded 3D models that give every character a stylized, comic-book look. The animations are fluid, the stages feature dynamic backgrounds, and the overall presentation punches well above what you'd expect from a fan project. It's still in open alpha with five characters available so far, but the community is already grinding online matches and discovering advanced tech.

Ultimate Sonic Smackdown Mechanics

Ultimate builds a proper fighting game system with mechanics that reward both newcomers and experienced FGC players:

Tag System & Assists

Build teams of 1, 2, or 3 fighters. Call assists with L1/R1 to extend combos or cover approaches. Use active switch to swap characters mid-combo, and chain supers between teammates with Delayed Hyper Combos (DHC).

Defensive Options

Burst (L2) breaks you out of combos when you're stuck — use it wisely, it has a limited meter. Parry lets you counter-attack on a correct read. Push block creates distance when you're under pressure.

Offense & Inputs

Three attack buttons plus a launcher, with specials using classic quarter-circle inputs. Counter hits give extra combo potential. A dedicated run button (RT) closes distance fast. Command normals add depth to individual characters.

Accessibility

Auto combos let new players deal solid damage by mashing one button. The system rewards learning, but doesn't lock beginners out of the fun. Team size is flexible — play solo with extra health or go full 3v3.

Sonic Smackdown Characters

Original Roster (10+ fighters)

The original game's strength is its roster diversity. Every character plays completely differently: Every fighter has selectable alternate colors, and a unique mechanic lets you recover health by collecting rings during the fight.

Ultimate Roster (Alpha — Growing)

Ultimate's alpha launched with five fighters, each rebuilt from scratch with new models and entirely new movesets:

Sonic

The rushdown king. His spin dash is extremely powerful in the current build, with fast aerial combos and a homing attack that chains into everything. Widely considered one of the strongest characters in alpha.

Shadow

Versatile all-rounder. Uses Chaos Snap teleports for mix-ups, has a stylized walk animation, and counters with Chaos-powered specials. No spin dash — plays completely differently from Sonic.

Knuckles

The power character. Slower movement but massive damage per hit. His uppercut punishes hard, and his gameplay revolves around reading the opponent and landing big punishes.

Eggman

Pilots a combat mecha suit. Heavy stomp attacks, violent punches, and a bounce move. Surprisingly viable and fun to play — not just a joke pick.

Mecha Sonic rounds out the alpha roster and is widely considered the top-tier character. He has command normals, auto-teleports on hit, Sentinel-style projectiles, and devastating loop combos. Extremely technical but incredibly rewarding for players who put in the time.

Stages

Both versions feature iconic Sonic locations reimagined as fighting arenas. Ultimate's stages use detailed 3D backgrounds with dynamic elements:
