Sonic Galactic answers a question fans have asked for decades: what if Sega made a 2D Sonic game for the Saturn? Built by Starteam with hand-pixeled art, five playable characters including an original mole named Tunnel, and a vertical level design philosophy that gives you more freedom than any classic Sonic title, this fan game has earned comparisons to an official release. Multiple reviewers have called it the Sonic Mania successor the community has been waiting for.

How to Install Sonic Galactic

Windows

Extract the .zip to any folder and run the game executable directly. No installation required. A controller is recommended but keyboard works perfectly.

macOS

Extract the .zip and open the app. If macOS blocks it as unidentified, right-click and select "Open," then confirm. This build is optimized for Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3).

A Saturn-Era Sonic That Never Was

Sonic Galactic doesn't try to be Sonic Mania, Sonic 3, or any other existing title. Starteam set out to build the 2D Sonic game the Saturn never got, and the result has its own visual identity, original zones, a new character, and fresh mechanics that genuinely push the classic formula forward. The hand-pixeled sprites are expressive and detailed — each character has unique running animations, idle poses, and victory celebrations that reveal their personality.
What sets this fan game apart is its commitment to verticality. Every character's signature ability is designed to move you upward, and the level design rewards climbing. The higher you go, the faster and smoother your path becomes. Lower routes are slower but always give you opportunities to reach upper platforms through launchers, springs, and terrain tricks. The result is a sense of freedom that blends Sonic 3 & Knuckles' exploration with Mania's speed — and no character is locked out of any path. If you can see a ledge, you can reach it with anyone. The soundtrack is entirely original, with each zone getting its own theme that captures the energy and rhythm of classic Sonic while sounding nothing like a remix. Combined with Saturn-era visual references — the Sega Saturn logo appears as lampposts, NiGHTS and Ristar cameos show up in crowds — it all feels like a love letter to a specific era of gaming, not just to Sonic.

Five Characters, Five Ways to Play

Every character shares the same levels but navigates them in fundamentally different ways. Their abilities all revolve around gaining height:

Sonic

Drop Dash, Spin Dash, and the brand-new Wall Dash — charge a Spin Dash against any wall and launch off it for massive height. He also gets a dedicated shield button that lets you use elemental shield powers without replacing his Insta Shield or Drop Dash.

Tails

Classic flight with one critical upgrade: he can cancel his flight into a spin attack at any point. No more falling helplessly when the flight meter runs out — Tails stays protected and dangerous mid-air.

Knuckles

Climb and glide as always, but now he keeps all his momentum while gliding. Spin Dash into a glide and you'll soar at full speed instead of resetting to the default — a change that completely transforms his gameplay.

Fang the Sniper

The bounty hunter returns with a gun that doubles as a jetpack. Charge it up and fire downward to blast yourself skyward — the longer the charge, the higher you fly. It also destroys ground enemies, making Fang surprisingly efficient at clearing paths.

Tunnel the Mole

A brand-new original character exclusive to Galactic. Tunnel burrows into the ground and launches himself at high speed in any direction you choose. Hit a slope and he rebounds; hit another wall and he digs in again, chaining launches for incredible height. Feels so natural that many fans forget he's not official.

Three Zones, Three Worlds

Demo 2 includes three zones with two acts each. Rather than cutting between levels, you physically walk from one zone into the next — a worldbuilding touch that makes Illusion Island feel connected and alive:
ZoneSettingWhat to Expect
Verdant IsleTropical beachThe opening zone starts visually muted and pale, but as you progress the sun rises and the whole stage bursts into vibrant color. Works as a natural tutorial that teaches mechanics without interrupting gameplay
Coral GardenUnderwater ruins & moonlit shoreAct 1 is entirely submerged in a beautiful water temple setting. Act 2 brings you to the surface at night — the contrast is striking, and the moonlit ocean backgrounds are genuinely wallpaper-worthy
Luminosity CityNeon-lit futuristic metropolisThe fan-favorite zone. Saturn logo lampposts, NiGHTS and Ristar references, real-time speedometers, animated shop signs, and a rival robot that challenges you to a race through the entire level
Beyond the main zones, there are 3D special stages with a vivid color palette — possibly inspired by concept art from the cancelled Sonic X-treme — where you collect Galactic Gems. Bonus stages use a grid-based ring collection format reminiscent of early Saturn-era prototypes. Both are accessed through hidden portals scattered across the main levels.

The Story Behind Illusion Island

The adventure takes place on Illusion Island, a mysterious landmass that surfaces once every decade. Legend says a meteorite of immense power crashed there eons ago, bringing with it an unknown cosmic energy. After his defeats in Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Triple Trouble, Dr. Eggman detected an energy signal from the island's reemergence and discovered that the meteorite could double his badnik production without losing any quality or power. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles investigate after hearing rumors of strange activity. Fang tags along seeking revenge after Eggman abandoned him, and Tunnel — a young mole native to the island — joins the group after his home is overrun by robots. The Hardboiled Heavies also return as part of Eggman's forces. The only way to neutralize Eggman's seemingly unlimited power source is to gather the seven Galactic Gems hidden across the island.

Known Issues Worth Mentioning

Sonic Galactic is still a demo, and it shows in a few areas. Stability can be rough — players have reported clipping through walls, blank screens when entering special stages, and characters falling through floors in bonus stages. The 3D special stages lag when too many objects are on screen. Some reviewers also feel that later acts run too long, stretching to 9 minutes including boss fights, which can drain momentum. The bosses themselves have been criticized for erratic movement patterns and extended invincibility phases that test patience more than skill. These are growing pains of an ambitious project — the core gameplay beneath them is outstanding, and Starteam is actively patching issues.
