Sonic Dimensions

Sonic Dimensions fan game logo and title screen

Sonic Dimensions takes the beloved Sonic Advance pixel art and pairs it with full-blown boost gameplay inspired by Unleashed and Generations. Developed by Phantom Radea, this free 2D platformer packs 7 zones linked by a hub world, two playable characters with completely different movesets, a ring-powered skill shop, four shield types, and Super and Hyper transformations — all inside a 90 MB download that plays far bigger than its size.

GBA Sprites, Modern Speed

Sonic Dimensions builds its entire identity on a contradiction that somehow works: Sonic Advance and Sonic Battle sprite art running at boost-era speeds. The crisp GBA pixels animate fluidly through boost dashes, tricks off springs, and grind rail sequences, creating a visual style no other fan game has replicated. Particle effects burst across the screen during boosts and transformations, and the backgrounds draw from iconic Sonic locations like Empire City and Cool Edge.
The physics deserve special attention. Momentum has genuine weight here — boosting isn't a free pass through stages, and spin dashes launch with real purpose. The air control borrows from Advance while the forward momentum leans closer to Rush, blending both into something that feels tuned specifically for this game. Seasoned players have compared the 2D boost handling favorably to Generations' 2D sections, calling it some of the best they've experienced in a side-scrolling boost game.

Hub World and Zones

Rather than a simple stage select, Sonic Dimensions connects everything through a hub world inspired by Sonic Unleashed. Tails runs a skill shop in the hub, and numbered warp rings scattered across the area lead into each zone. It gives the game a sense of place that most 2D Sonic titles skip entirely.
Zone Theme
Radiant FallsTropical greenery — the starting area around the hub
Starlight SpeedwayNeon highways with ramps, grind rails and high-speed sections
Empire CityUrban landscape pulled straight from Unleashed's aesthetic
Aquatic TerminalUnderwater segments with bass-heavy music and aquatic hazards
Cool EdgeIce and snow with unique rail mechanics and stomp-boosted speed
Cosmic TempestDark industrial space zone with Zero Gravity-inspired soundtrack
Egg UtopiaEggman's fortress with upside-down segments — the hardest zone in the demo
After clearing all seven, a final Eggman Land-style stage tests everything you've learned with demanding physics and tight platforming. Beyond that, a bonus stage called Jungle Joy Ride unlocks — an extended challenge level where the music loops continuously without restarting on death, keeping the flow intact during retry-heavy sections.

Sonic and Shadow: Two Distinct Playstyles

Both characters share the same stages but play them very differently. Sonic comes with a double jump out of the gate and the classic spin dash, while Shadow trades vertical mobility for raw aggression — his homing dash fires him forward in a straight line and can chain infinitely, and his Chaos Blast spends boost meter for area-of-effect damage. Even their slides differ: Shadow's works as a short-range teleport, giving him a unique edge in tight corridors. Skills are purchased separately for each character at Tails' skill shop using rings collected during gameplay. Key abilities include: Four purchasable shields add another layer: Fire (lost in water), Thunder, Water, and the standout Orbit Shield — a ring of projectiles that absorbs up to three hits before breaking.

Super and Hyper Transformations

Collecting all Chaos Emeralds unlocks Super forms for both characters, granting invincibility and infinite boost at the cost of one ring per second. Sonic pushes further with Hyper Sonic, which adds the devastating Hyper Dash — a screen-clearing attack triggered mid-air. Shadow's kit deliberately stops at Super to keep the two characters balanced against each other.
