Sonic Encore
Sonic Encore takes iconic zones from the classic 2D Sonic games and rebuilds them as full 3D levels you can actually run through. Developed over 4 years by lordgimpet as a passion project that started as a way to learn programming, the Final Build delivers 6 zones, 12 acts, boss fights, and 6 playable characters — making it one of the rare 3D Sonic fan games that reached a genuinely complete state.

From Learning Project to Finished Fan Game
Sonic Encore started in 2019 when lordgimpet set out to learn programming and level design. Building a 3D Sonic fan game seemed like a fun challenge, and what began as an experiment quickly grew into something the community took notice of. Public demos at SAGE 2021 and SAGE 2022 built anticipation, and the project attracted contributions from notable fan game developers including Posquen (creator of Sonic Calamity), Gry (creator of Sonic GT), supersonic68 (Bumper Framework), and Lucas Rodríguez (Ring Engine). The developer described the game as "a greatest hits of some of my favorite levels" — no original story, no custom soundtrack, just pure gameplay built around reimagining classic zones in three dimensions. When the Final Build dropped at SAGE 2023, lordgimpet confirmed that "everything I set as a goal for completion has been achieved," marking the end of the project's development road.Momentum-Driven 3D Controls
Where Sonic Encore really shines is in how it handles speed. The momentum system rewards skillful play — you build velocity through slopes, spin dashes, and level geometry rather than hitting scripted speed boosters. Chaining momentum across entire sections feels natural when you get it right, and the levels are designed to let skilled players maintain flow without stopping. Your moveset includes spin dash, drop dash, homing attack, stomp, and ring dash. The stomp deserves special attention: unlike most Sonic games where slamming into the ground kills your speed, Sonic Encore's stomp preserves your momentum. Hit the ground at full speed and you keep rolling. The community widely considers this one of the game's smartest design choices. The 3D loops are manual and physics-driven — they feel satisfying to execute rather than being automated spectacles. Several content creators have gone as far as claiming that Sonic Encore controls better than Sonic GT, which is significant praise given GT's standing in the fan game community. That said, there is a noticeable weak point: low-speed control feels stiff. When standing still or barely moving, Sonic is rigid and unresponsive. Fortunately, the wide open level design rarely demands precision platforming at a standstill — once you build speed, everything flows. All 6 Zones Explored
Every zone is pulled from a different classic Sonic title and rebuilt as a wide, exploration-friendly 3D environment. Levels are large — comparable to Sonic Heroes in scope — with individual runs lasting 8 to 12 minutes depending on how much you explore.| Zone | Origin | What to Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Emerald Hill | Sonic 2 | Open green fields and cascading waterfalls. The introductory zone eases you into 3D movement with gentle terrain and forgiving layout |
| Angel Island | Sonic 3&K | Starts on a tropical beach, then the forest catches fire between acts — faithfully recreating the iconic moment from Sonic 3. Wide branching paths reward exploration |
| Ice Cap | Sonic 3&K | Visually the most stunning zone. Expansive snowy landscapes with sliding mechanics. The penguin enemies are relentless — they will chase you down and land hits |
| Mystic Cave | Sonic 2 | Dark underground caverns with floor arrows for orientation. Act 2 has a vertical climbing section that punishes mistakes — miss one jump and you repeat the whole ascent |
| Aqua Lake | Sonic 2 (MS) | A deep cut from the Master System game, never before seen in 3D. Colorful waterslide sections and a laid-back pace make this the most relaxing zone |
| Oil Ocean | Sonic 2 | The final and hardest zone. Industrial hazards everywhere, leading to a multi-phase octopus boss. Improved lighting in the Final Build gives it much better atmosphere |
6 Playable Characters
Each character offers a genuinely different way to approach every zone, with abilities that open up alternate paths and shortcuts throughout the game:Sonic
The balanced all-rounder with spin dash, drop dash, and homing attack. His overpowered drop dash can break levels wide open if you master the timing.
Tails
Flight lets him reach elevated platforms and skip tough sections entirely. The best pick for exploring each zone's vertical design and hidden upper routes.
Knuckles
Wall climbing and gliding give access to entirely different sections of each zone. So versatile he can sometimes break the intended level design completely.
Shadow
Plays like Sonic but with a longer-range dash and extended homing attack reach. Includes a Chaos Control ability, though it adds little practical value in gameplay.
Blaze
Slightly faster than Sonic with a brief hover and a diving drop attack. She absorbs extra hits before losing rings, making her forgiving for tougher zones like Oil Ocean.
Ray
The flying squirrel from SegaSonic. His aerial glide covers huge horizontal distances, perfect for reaching far-off platforms and shortcuts other characters can't touch.
Sonic Encore FAQ
Is Sonic Encore finished?
Yes. The Final Build was released at SAGE 2023 after 4 years of development. The developer confirmed there will be no major updates beyond potential bug fixes.
How long is Sonic Encore?
A single playthrough takes roughly 2 to 3 hours. With 6 characters offering different routes through every zone, there is plenty of reason to replay.
Does Sonic Encore have original music?
